Do you know the number of Christmas and greeting cards thrown away every year? How about how many greeting cards you personally have thrown away without recycling in the past year? Do you know how many trees had to die to feed your greeting card habit? Yes, it’s like a national addiction, at least here in the States! And it’s more than just the lose of tress that will hurt our environment, climate and health.

  • Those glossy shiny pictures on the cards contain harsh chemicals in the ink.
  • The factories that make these cards release pollution into the air during the manufacturing process.
  • Then the cards have to be transported to warehouses and stores.
  • And ultimately, you drive to the store to buy them.

Of course all of these transportation steps release even more pollutants into the air! Please stop the madness!

It’s great that you know the beneficial impact you can have on our environment by not just throwing away your greeting cards, but we know some people would like a more creative option.

I agree completely. Recycling and/or reducing paper is one of the many critical factors necessary to saving and improving our environment, and greeting cards use a ton of paper every year!

My wife always puts our Christmas cards into a scrap book once the holiday season is over. It is a nice way to preserve a few memories and reduces the amount of trash that we put in the garbage!

I definitely agree with your message on this site. Recycling is very important not just with Christmas cards but with anything that could be recycled. But you’re right, there is an immense amount of Christmas cards being thrown out every holiday season and it’s important to spread the word to people about the fact that these cards should be recycled.

    • I’m glad you see the importance of recycling greeting cards and Christmas cards in particular. Valentines Day is coming up and is almost as bad.

  • With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it think it’s very timely that I have found your blog. I will definitely be sending and receiving my share of greeting cards, so I will be sure that I recycle those that I do not keep.

  • Jerry from unique valentine gift:

My wife is the Queen of recycling greeting cards. She’s even Xeroxed some of her favorites and sent the copies! I’ll send her this link.

    • Not the Xerox copies!? Well the copies actually burn through more trees…:-( That’s okay as long as the copies AND the originals go into the recycle bin… :-)

  • In all seriousness, do you really need more stuff? more chocolate? more flowers? Why not save our beautiuful Earth, be good to our trees and flowers, consume less, recycle more, and enjoy each others’ company this (and every) Valentine’s Day?

  • I LOVE it that it seems so many people are into recycling cards. And THANK YOU for these added ideas! I have collected all cards since I can remember, at the moment I have 3 shoe boxes full. To begin with I collected cards for sentimental reasons, it is quite a trip down memory lane when you go back to your 7th, 8th, 9th birthday etc, read through the cards an remember who your good friends were that are long forgotten. My Great Aunt Fran is the one who got it into my head that it is an even better idea to recycle these cards which can be done in the simplest form. If a card has only been written on the non picture side, but the card in half and write at the back of the picture.
Decoupage is my next favorite hobby especially when decorating a box that I will then give as a gift.
There are so many ways to recycle out there and it is so refreshing to see how many people enjoy it as much as I now do!
